Our Ideals

Brothers at a home game
The brotherhood of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity is based on four ideals: Fraternal, Intellectual, Social and Spiritual. These ideals form the foundation of our brotherhood and help us to develop as leaders and men of integrity.
To assist us in meeting our ideals and to develop as men, we have a team of three advisors.
Dr. David Emory Stooksbury, state climatologist and associate professor of engineering and atmospheric sciences at UGA, is our academic advisor. He attends weekly chapter meetings and is always available to assist with academic or personal problems. “Stooks” or “Pop” as he is called has been a member of Phi Kappa Theta since 1978. In 2006, he was recognized by the National Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity as the advisor of the year. He graduated from UGA with majors in plant genetics (BSA), physics and astronomy (BSPA), and agronomy (MS). His Ph.D. is from the University of Virginia in environmental sciences. Before returning to UGA he was on the faculty at the University of Nebraska.
Mr. Richard Maggiore, local businessman, is our alumni advisor. He routinely attends weekly chapter meetings. He is always available to advise the fraternity or to advise brothers on professional or personal matters. “The Godfather” as he is called was in the second associate members class of Phi Kappa Theta at UGA in the middle 1960s and majored in marketing (BBA). He also serves as a National Trustee for Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity and was recognized by the National fraternity as an outstanding alumnus in 2002.
Fr. Dann Brown, Episcopal chaplain to UGA, is our chaplain. Fr. Dann is always there to advise brothers and associate members on personal and spiritual matters. He is real easy to talk with and is very unjudgemental. When a brother has a problem, he emphasizes dealing with the problem and not condemning. He gives a short “chaplain talk” once a month to the brothers on issues suggested by the brotherhood. “Padre” as he is called is the son of a Baptist preacher and graduated from Furman University where he studied religion (BA) and the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee) where he earned a Master of Divinity.
Intellectual Development

Brothers Graduating
Phi Kappa Theta attracts intellectually motivated men who share a passion for lifelong knowledge, learning and development. The first and primary reason that a man should be at the University of Georgia is to succeed academically. We take academics very seriously. We want all our brothers to succeed. To show our commitment to academics, we require all new members to have a minimum GPA of 3.00 the semester of his associate membership or a 3.00 cumulative UGA GPA. The brothers work closely with the associate members to achieve the 3.00 GPA requirement. Phi Kappa Theta exceeds UGA retention rates, average GPAs and graduation rates by providing an intellectually stimulating environment and consistent standards of academic performance. Phi Kappa Theta challenges members to maximize their lifelong personal and professional development.
Social Development

Brothers Volunteering
Phi Kappa Theta fosters human development through community service and social interaction. We are socially engaged, recognizing their responsibility to affect positive change in themselves and others. In 2008 we earned a bronze medal for community service given by the White house. Community activities include “Adopt a Highway,” Children’s Miracle Network (our National philantrophy), volunteering at the animal shelter, and involvement in local political campaigns. University service includes Mark’s position with student government, Andrei’s moot court, Dawgcamp more needed. Phi Kappa Theta’s values are demonstrated through the actions of our members, who better their communities as citizens in a global society.
Spiritual Development

Father Brown & Brothers
Phi Kappa Theta Brothers explore their natural curiosity about spirituality and individual purpose. Our rituals guide us to develop spiritually. All our rituals emphasize our relationships to God and to each other. Major rituals are conducted in churches. Our weekly chapter meetings begin and end with prayer. We honor our Catholic heritage but accept any Christian traditions into our brotherhood, including seekers. Currently we have brothers from the Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic traditions. Some brothers have no religious tradition. We welcome diversity that embodies the moral values upon which we were established. While we support spiritual development in all our brothers, how an individual brother accomplishes his spiritual development is left to him. While many brothers routinely attend worship services, this is not required.
Fraternal Development

Brothers at the beach
Phi Kappa Theta is a committed journey of lifelong brotherhood. This journey begins as an associate member at the University of Georgia. Through the support of each other and brotherhood activities, brotherhood grows. Some of our brotherhood activities include camping trips, monthly pizza with alumni, special dinners celebrating important events in the life of chapter and individual brothers. Phi Kappa Theta maintains its relevance through a valuable network of collegiate and alumni members. Phi Kappa Theta challenges its members to accept responsibility for all Brothers, their communities and society.
