Welcome to the Department of Political Science at the University of Georgia. This website is designed to give you a snapshot of our department’s ongoing teaching, research, and service activities. It will also introduce you to our faculty and staff, and provide information about upcoming events. I am proud of the quality of research produced by our faculty, the outstanding teaching and mentoring that they provide, and the service that they perform. I am also proud of the quality of our undergraduate and graduate programs, and the success of our alumni.

Our faculty members are known for the high quality of their research. They have published in all the major political science journals and with the leading university presses, and have funded their research through grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation. They have also authored several widely used textbooks. This research has had an impact on the academic community, on public policy, and on generations of students who have read it in graduate and undergraduate classrooms around the country. In addition to producing high quality research, our department is consistently ranked among the most productive political science departments in the nation.

Our faculty is equally committed to outstanding teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level. The Department’s excellence in teaching is known throughout the university and beyond. Members of our faculty at all ranks have won every major teaching award offered by the university. Two of our faculty members are currently Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professors – the university’s highest teaching honor – and one was named the Georgia Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Several have been chosen as Lilly Teaching Fellows. Our faculty is also active in the Honors program, in supervising government internships, and in promoting study abroad opportunities for our undergraduates.

Finally, as befits a department in the School of Public and International Affairs, our faculty members are actively involved in public service. For example, they present talks and lectures around the world, are regularly quoted in every kind of national and international news medium, and offer advice to policymakers.

Apart from providing important scholarship, excellent education, and public service, the Department of Political Science is also a friendly and collegial place to study, learn, and work. That is also something for which I am proud. You can find out much more about our programs of study, ongoing activities, and accomplishments by visiting other parts of this web page. If you still can’t find what you need, please contact us. And, if you visit our department, I would love to meet you.
