and Health Sciences Institute
The Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute (BHSI) facilitates
and promotes interdisciplinary research and instructional efforts
at UGA in the fields of biomedical and health sciences. The
BHSI provides leadership, an institutional structure, funding,
academic programs, and other resources for students and faculty
from diverse departments and programs at UGA who share a commitment
to biomedical and human health research and education. |
Carl
Vinson Institute of Government
Systematic research by institute faculty equips government officials
with timely information as they deal with increasingly complex
issues. This research takes such forms as applied research on
specific concerns requested by clients, legislative research
in response to requests from the General Assembly, legal research
analyzing state and federal law, and scholarly research. Publications
bring relevant research to a wide audience, making it easily
accessible. |
Complex
Carbohydrate Research Center
Technology transfer, collaborations with industry and academia,
and the provision of carbohydrate analytical services to the
scientific community are an integral part of the CCRC's mission.
CCRC personnel are presently engaged in more than 130 collaborations
with scientists at universities and corporations in Georgia,
the United States, North America, South America, Europe, and
Asia. |
Institute
for Behavioral Research
The Institute for Behavioral Research (IBR) is an umbrella organization
composed of the Center for Family Research, the Center for Research
on Behavioral Health and Human Services Delivery, the Contextual
Research Group, the Methods and Models Group, and the Survey
Research Center. Current research focuses on alcoholism, cancer,
depression, social psychological changes among the elderly,
parenting and spousal abuse. |
Institute of Ecology
Ecologists at the University of Georgia have worked together
to promote interdisciplinary team research and to deal holistically
with humans and the environment. As a result, the University
of Georgia has emerged as a leading center for ecological research
and training. The Institute of Ecology is the primary academic
unit for ecological research and teaching at the University
of Georgia. |
Center
for Humanities and Arts
The Center for Humanities and Arts promotes scholarly inquiry
and creative activity in the humanities and the arts by supporting
faculty research grants, lectures, symposia, publications, visiting
scholars, visiting artists, collaborative instruction and public
conferences, exhibitions, and performances. |
New
Media Institute
The New Media Institute is an interdisciplinary unit that explores
the creative, critical, and commercial dimensions of innovative
digital communication technology. |
Savannah
River Ecology Laboratory (SREL)
The SREL has organized its research into four major programs:
Advanced Analytical Center; Ecotoxicology, Ecological Stewardship,
and Radioecology. All of these programs conduct basic ecological
research and apply the findings to environmental issues on the
Savannah River System and elsewhere. Much of SREL’s research
is applicable to environmental problems related to the effects
of industrial activities, including remediation strategies. |
Institute
for Leadership Advancement
The Institute for Leadership Advancement (ILA) is a multidisciplinary
academic organization housed in the Terry College of Business.
Its purpose is to create and promote cutting-edge knowledge
about leadership and use this knowledge to develop leaders who
enhance the performance of their organizations and communities.
Through our five programs, the Institute provides a variety
of opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students,
executives, and business organizations. |
Selig
Center for Economic Growth
Created to convey economic expertise to Georgia businesses and
entrepreneurs, the Selig Center for Economic Growth is primarily
responsible for conducting research on economic, demographic,
and social issues related to Georgia’s current and future
growth. |
Center
for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases
The Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases (CTEGD)
is a universitywide, interdisciplinary center established to
foster research, educational programs, and service related to
tropical and emerging diseases. Based on a foundation of parasitology,
immunology, cellular and molecular biology, and genetics, the
CTEGD currently involves investigators in the College of Arts
and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the College
of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. |
Institute for African-American
Studies
The Institute for African American Studies is dedicated to the
production of creative research on the achievements of African
Americans. In addition, it serves as a cultural repository and
resource for the citizenry of Georgia. |
Agricultural
Experiment Stations
The Agricultural Experiment Stations, Research and Education
Centers, and Research Farms make up the research arm of the
University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences. |
Animal
Health Research Center (AHRC)
With the addition of the Animal Health Research Center (AHRC)
to the University of Georgia, investigators will study infectious
diseases and toxicity problems that plague animal and human
populations. |
Center
for Applied Isotope Studies (CAIS)
Known for pioneering efforts in radiometric and stable isotope
analysis technique, the Center for Applied Isotope Studies is
a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to research in nuclear
analytical methods and systems technology. |
Artificial
Intelligence Center
The Artificial Intelligence Center is an interdepartmental research
and instructional center within the Franklin College of Arts
and Sciences. Strengths include logic programming, expert systems,
neural nets, genetic algorithms, and natural language processing.
The Artificial Intelligence Center also houses the undergraduate
degree program in cognitive science. |
Center
for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Processes
The mission of the Center is to become the premier research
unit worldwide in the study of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Over fifty faculty from across the University of Georgia are
members of the Center. In addition, the Center has collaborative
links with the State Museum of Natural History, the State Botanical
Gardens, Highlands Biological Station, Archbold Biological Station,
the US Geological Survey, and the US Forest Service. |
Center
for Computational
Quantum Chemistry
The Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University
of Georgia seeks to develop theoretical and computational methods
through mathematical models for describing and understanding
the movement and function of electrons in molecules and to apply
the theoretical methods to significant problems of broad chemical
interest. |
Dowden
Center for New Media Studies
The Dowden Center aspires to be the leading state, national,
and international site for the promotion of scholarly inquiries
about the current and future impacts of new and emerging electronic
media on individuals, organizations, industries, and society.
The current focus of the Dowden Center is interactive television. |
Education
(College of) Centers, Clinics, Labs, and Projects
As part of a Research I institution, the College of Education
provides unique instructional, research, and service opportunities
for both faculty and students. The centers, clinics, labs, and
projects based in the education college not only provide real-world
learning experiences for students but also serve as an arena
for groundbreaking research and community-oriented service. |
Emerging Crops and
Technologies Program
The Emerging Crops and Technologies Program was initiated to
provide a means of commercializing agricultural research within
the University of Georgia. The program provides a link between
the university, agribusiness, governmental agencies, lending
institutions, groups of farmers, and rural agricultural economic
development administrators. |
Faculty of Engineering
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Georgia is a
new kind of engineering school organized to capture the convergence
of scientific and engineering disciplines. This interdisciplinary
approach to engineering increases the opportunity for learning,
research, and outreach, and gives rise to new but pervasive
fields like pharmaceutical engineering, metabolic engineering,
marine engineering, ecological engineering, information engineering,
and biological engineering. |
