STEVEN R. H. BEACH, Ph.D., is the Director
of the Institute for Behavioral Research and Distinguished Research
Professor of Psychology at the University of Georgia. For the
past 20 years, Dr. Beach has been examining the role of marital
processes in depression. He is interested both in the potential
of marital relationship variables to protect against depression
as well as the potential of depression to precipitate marital
problems. More recently, he has focused attention on the role
of self-evaluation maintenance processes in marital satisfaction
and marital behavior. Dr. Beach is interested in prevention
and treatment as well as developing better models of the linkage
between intrapersonal and interpersonal systems. He received
his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at State University
of New York at Stony Brook.
Most recently Dr. Beach has been involved in formulating culturally
sensitive, community based programs to strengthen marital and
parenting relationships and to disseminate empirically supported
programs. His work on the SAAF and ProSAAM programs provide
the foundation for his involvlement in ProSAAF, a program which
combines them into a single framework.
