Athens is located approximately 70 miles east-northeast of Atlanta, Georgia at the intersection of US Highways 78 (east and west) and 441 (north and south). Approximate driving time from Atlanta is 1.5 hours.
The most direct route when travelling from the Atlanta airport is I-285 northeast to I-20, I-20 east to GA 138 in Conyers, GA (exit 42), GA 138 northeast to US 78 in Monroe, GA, and then US 78 east to Athens. If driving from the northwest through Atlanta, follow I-85 east to GA 316, GA 316 to US 78, and US 78 east to Athens. If driving from the northeast on I-85, exit south on US 441 at Commerce, GA. When driving from the east on I-20 or the south, follow US 441 through Madison, GA to Athens.
