The investigation of protists in Ukraine was started as early as in the middle
of the 19th century by Leon S. Cienkowsky and Ilya I. Metschnikoff, whose
tremendous scientific heritage was later continued and enlarged.
For almost 20 years, up to the collapse of the former USSR (1991), three Ukrainian
divisions, located, respectively, in Kiev, Kharkov and Odessa, were affiliated
with the former Soviet Society of Protozoologists. At present, no separate
Ukrainian society of protozoologists has yet been organized. However, several
scientists working in the above three towns seem to make a conventional center
of protozoology in the country. In addition, some protozoological studies
are carried out in towns Uzhgorod, Sumy and Sevastopol.
The majority of protistological studies are carried out in Kiev, the
capital of the Ukraine, where several large institutes and universities are
available.
The Institute of Hydrobiology: Dr. A.A. Nebrat investigates
ciliates of the Dnieper River reservoirs. Parasitic ciliates of fresh-water
crustaceans and mollusks are of interest of Drs. D.P. Kurandina and V.I. Yourishinets.
The I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology: Dr. E.G. Boschko
studies loricate peritrichous ciliates of the Ukrainian fauna. Dr. N.A. Ovcharenko
works with microsporidia of fishes and crustaceans. Dr. I.V. Dovgal is engaged
in studying the fauna, ecology, systematic, evolution and phylogeny of sessile
protists. His basic scientific interests concern Suctorea, Chonotrichia, Pilisuctorida,
and Rhinchodia (Ciliophora).
The Taras Shevchenko National University: Dr. P.Ja. Kiloczycki
investigates microsporidia of blood-sucking mosquitoes. The autotrophic protists
are of particular interest of an algologist, Dr. I.Yu. Kostikov.
The N.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, the National Academy of Sciences
of the Ukraine: Studies into algology are carried out by Prof. N.P.
Masyuk, who published several monographs, Prof. S. Wasser, Dr. P.M.Tsarenko,
Dr. N.V. Kondratjeva and by Dr. A.F. Krakhmalny, whose studies on Dinophyta
of the Ukraine (biodiversity, morphology, taxonomy, phylogeny and ecology)
are well known.
The Ukrainian Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases:
Dr. I.K. Lokteva with colleagues study in particular human intestinal parasites
and human toxoplasmosis.
The Kiev National University of Agriculture: Dr. V.F. Galat
is in particular a specialist in blood parasites of cattle.
The Institute of Geological Sciences: Dr. Yu. V. Vernigorova
studies fauna both fossil and recent foraminifers.
In Odessa: there is a large Regional Center on Toxoplasmosis,
well known all over the former Soviet Union.
Odessa Branch of the Institute of Biology of Southern Seas:
Alexander Kurilov makes research into specific and ecological structure and
spatial distribution of ciliates in marine coastal waters and estuaries; the
energy flux within pelagic microbial food webs; quantitative and qualitative
investigations of ciliate-dinoflagellate interactions; and "red tides".
Ludmila Terenko and Galina Terenko investigate specific and ecological structure
and spatial distribution of dinoflagellates and phytoplankton in marine coastal
waters and estuaries; "bloom" and "red tides" and potentially
harmful and toxic dinoflagellates.
In Kharkov: Kharkov National University: Dr. A.I. Bozhkov
studies ciliate ecology and considering with use of ciliates in bioassays.
Research in the field of algae biodiversity pursue Prof. T.V. Dogadina, Dr.
O.S. Gorbulin and others. These data are applied in the regional ecological
monitoring.
In Uzhgorod: Uzhgorod National University: Prof. A.A.
Kovalchuk is a ciliate ecologist and hydrobiologist investigates the fauna,
quantitative development and functional activity of free-living ciliates of
the inland waters of Ukraine. Dr. Natalia Kovalchuk investigates testate amoebae
of regional fauna.
In Sumy: Sumy State Pedagogical University: a group of
ciliatologists (Drs. R.V. Babko, T.N. Kuzmina and V. Kravchenko) deals with
ciliated protozoa in the epiphyton on the aquatic macrophytes.
In Sevastopol: The Institute of Biology of Southern Seas:
the investigations of marine phytoplankton pursue in particular in Laboratory
of Microplankton under the supervision of Dr. I.G. Polikarpov. The regional
fauna of foraminifers is also of interest of the Institute specialists (O.V.
Anikeeva).
This short account on the Ukrainian protistology is far from being full and
will be gradually supplemented.
The works of the Ukrainian protistologists are published in both the Ukrainian
scientific magazines ["Vestnik Zoologii" (Kiev), "Hydrobiological
Journal" (Kiev), "Marine Ecology" (Sevastopol), "Algology"
(Kiev)], and different Russian and International journals. Ukrainian specialists
published several monographs on various protist groups and guides for their
identification:
