Forming the lens from a stretched capillary tube.
PROTIST2008 attendees may remember Patrick Keeling's microscope-building demo at the Protist in the Arts night. Patrick has posted detailed instructions for building the microscope, and determining its power, on his lab Website (http://www.botany.ubc.ca/keeling/resources.html).

Check out the Website for examples of protists photographed using the microscope; they are very impressive.
