F.A.Q.

1. Can I just get a master's degree?

The UGA Psychology Department does not admit students seeking only a master's degree; students are admitted into a Ph.D. program and may obtain a M.S. along the way.

2. Can I start in the spring or summer?

We only offer fall admission; however, students accepted for the fall may register for the summer before they are admitted. Students may also be able to delay registration until the Spring after they are admitted; this needs to be arranged with the program chair.

3. What is the degree objective/major code for psychology?

Degree objective/major code for psychology is 688a

4. How many students do you admit, and what are their typical grades and GRE scores?

Average admission information over a 5 year period (Fall 97-01)

Completed Applications Reviewed: 464

Accepted: (of reviewed applications) 13%

Enrolled: (of accepted applicants) 44%

GRE: 1200-1250 range

GPA: 3.3-3.5 range

5. What graduate programs do you offer?

Application to the Department of Psychology requires both an application to the Graduate Admissions Office and a supplemental application to the Department of Psychology.

Materials that need to be sent to the Department of Psychology:

Send via postal mail or parcel service to the attention of the Graduate Coordinator, one package containing the following items. Failure to send the materials listed below in a single package may cause application delays.

    1. Supplemental application
    2. Unofficial GRE scores. Official GRE scores must be reported directly to the graduate office.
    3. Optional: copies of theses, paper presentations, publications or other evidence of scholarly or professional work.

Three Letters of Refernce should be addressed to:
Dr. B. Randy Hammond
Graduate Coordinator
Department of Psychology
The University of Georgia
Athens GA 30602-3013
** Please note that these letters are now submitted online through the graduate school.

Applications are considered complete when the department has received copies of all required information from the UGA Graduate Admissions Office, and all the required information that is sent directly to the department (i.e., letters of recommendation, supplemental application and essay).

For international applicants there is a supplemental section (pages 7-9) in the application for admission booklet. This information is also available on our page concerning Graduate Application as well as in our FAQs.

7. When will I know if I have been accepted?

As soon as a decision is made. We will not process incomplete applications. We will process them, however, if all letters have not arrived, but not without the GRE, TOEFL (if required) and all transcripts and the personal statement. Decisions are normally made by early April; some students may be admitted later than that date, however.
