General Information

The UGA Department of Psychology, within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, is a nationally recognized department with award-winning professors who are dedicated to providing the highest quality graduate education possible to our graduate students.

The Department of Psychology offers graduate programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

How to Apply

The department has six graduate programs:

arrow Applied Psychology

arrow Neuroscience and Behavior (formerly known as Biopsychology)

arrow Clinical Psychology

arrow Cognitive/Experimental Psychology

arrow Life-Span Developmental Psychology

arrow Social Psychology

*Please note that the University of Georgia has 3 different departments on campus which offer degrees in some branch of Psychology. Students seeking graduate degrees in Counseling Psychology or Educational Psychology should direct their queries and applications to those departments.

Research Facilities

The Department is housed in a six-story building providing space for offices, seminar rooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a training clinic for psychological services. Libraries contain leading journals and titles in psychology and related areas. Facilities include a functional brain imaging laboratory, histological laboratory, psychophysiological recording chambers, observation rooms with videotape equipment for studying infants, children, and adults, sensory electrophysiological facilities, vision research equipment, and housing for a variety of animal species.

The department also has access to the Institute of Behavioral Research and the University Computer Center. We also have cooperative agreements with a number of other Institutions. For example, a student can enroll for course in any University System school in the state, or Emory without having to matriculate and the courses will show up on the UGA transcript. We also have a long history of agreements to use research facilities at the Atlanta Zoo, Laboratory Animal Breeder Services, and the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center, among others. More information about the specific research facilities available in the department is available on our research facilities page.

The Students

The University of Georgia has a current enrollment of around 31,000 of whom some 7,000 are graduate students. All geographic regions in the U.S. and numerous foreign countries are represented by the nearly 120 graduate students currently enrolled in the Psychology Department.

Recent Ph.D.s are employed as faculty at colleges and universities, at community mental health centers, in private clinical practice, and as researchers in private industry or government facilities.

The Community

Listed in several national ratings of cities as one of the most highly desirable places to live in the U.S., Athens, Georgia (known as the "Classic City"), blends the old with the new. Careful to preserve its "Old South" charm and heritage, as reflected in its Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture, the city also has made great strides in developing its cultural and industrial resources.

Athens/Clarke County, a community of approximately 110,000, is within a two hour drive of Atlanta, the Appalachian Mountains, and multiple recreational areas, and is served by air and bus. Athens has an excellent public school system, and two hospitals offering comprehensive health care and service; all major religious denominations are represented in the community. Major shopping, sports and recreational facilities are also available. Click here for more information on the Athens community.
