Welcome
The Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows at the University of Georgia are recent Ph.D. graduates from leading universities, appointed as temporary assistant professors, renewable annually, for up to three years.
The program is a partnership between the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Higher Education, and other University of Georgia academic units, including Engineering presently. J. Douglas Toma and Christopher C. Morphew, associate professors at the Institute of Higher Education, co-direct the program.
As the program enters its eighth year, it continues to provide counsel to the fellows, both individually and as a group, on improving teaching and positioning for a permanent faculty position. The fellows gather nine times over the course of the academic year, seven times for a lively 90-minute discussion on a topic of interest to the group and twice for an entire afternoon for a more sustained conversation. The meetings often include colleagues from UGA or elsewhere with interesting perspectives on new faculty careers.
The co-directors also visit each fellow in his or her classroom, providing advice on improving teaching and learning.
The fellows are appointed by various Franklin College departments and funded through the college. Fellows' positions are posted through regular means, as in the Chronicle of Higher Education, throughout the year preceding appointment. The Institute of Higher Education manages the program and provides the professional development associated with the program.
