Kimberly Brannen, Ph.D. (BSEH ‘95)—Kim is our board’s alumna representative. She earned her Bachelor of Science from UGA’s Department of Environmental Health Science in 1995 and currently works at Bristol Myers Squibb Company in Pennington, NJ. She is a research investigator in the Reproductive Toxicology group, leading a lab that uses tissue culture, zebrafish embryo assays, and molecular biology techniques to predict toxicity or teratogenicity of compounds in drug discovery or to investigate mechanisms of toxicity. Kim lives in Langhorne, PA.

 

Nancy Coverdell— Nancy is the widow of the late Senator Paul Coverdell, a former Delta Flight Attendant and a Georgia World Congress Center Authority Member. Biomedical initiatives at the University of Georgia are rarely mentioned without also recognizing the tremendous impact her family has had on these efforts. She is a former Atlanta resident now living on St. Simons Island, GA where she serves on several non-profit boards.

 

John A. Drew, FACHE—Jack’s leadership and commitment to the delivery of high quality healthcare services in the Athens Area are unparalleled. He was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Athens Regional Medical Center (ARMC)in 1982, and is credited with turning the community hospital into a regional center of excellence. He is also the CEO of Athens Regional Health Services, the parent company of ARMC thatincludes an HMO Health Plan, physician practices (comprised of primary carephysicians, specialists and a network of urgent care centers) and a foundation. He also serves as adjunct faculty for the College of Public Health. Jack lives in Athens.

 

Charles R. Evans, FACHE—Charlie is a veteran of healthcare administration. He is board certified in healthcare management and an ACHE Fellow and hasalso servedon the Board of Governors of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Currently, he is president and chief executive officer, TMS Health, an international health services organization. Previously, he was president of HCA’s Eastern Group, which included approximately 100 hospitals in 10 states. Prior to that, he was president of HCA’s Southeast Division, which includes 14 hospitals and 9 surgery centers throughout Georgia plus 9 facilities in the Carolinas. Charlie has also served as president for a number of other HCA entities. Charlie lives in Alpharetta, GA.

 

Anne Haddix, Ph.D.—Anne is Chief Policy Advisor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She earned her Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Georgia in 1993. She has worked in economic evaluation of public health programs, health policy in the United States and developing countries, and rural and international development economics. Anne lives in Atlanta, GA

J. Donald Millar, MD, DTPH (Lond.)—Don is President of Don Millar and Associates and the retired director of NIOSH and a retired Assistant Surgeon General. He is physician epidemiologist and an internationally renowned leader in occupational and environmental health. Don lives in Murrayville, GA.

Shyam K. Reddy (J.D. ’05)— Shyam earned his law degree from UGA and a Bachelors Degree in political science and a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University. He is a corporate attorney at Kilpatrick Stockton where he advises technology companies and private equity funds in negotiating and consummating their strategic growth transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and cross-border deals. Shyam has received numerous awards during his career, including: 2005 Georgia Trend Magazine Top 40 Under 40 Georgians; 2005 Atlanta Business Chronicle Top 40 Under 40 (Up and Comers); 2005, 2006 and 2007 Atlanta Magazine Georgia Rising Stars; and 2005 Multicultural Law Mover and Shaker. Shyam is also a member of the 2005 L.E.A.D. Atlanta Class of Leadership Atlanta and serves on the Board of Directors of TiE Atlanta and Common Cause of Georgia. He is also a founder and former board member of the Red Clay Democrats and the former General Counsel of The Young Democrats of Georgia.

 

Doug Skelton, M.D. —Doug is the Coastal District Health Director and President of Georgia Public Health Association. His professional career has included private practice, medical administration, public service (including two years in the United States Public Health Service), and medical education. Doug is the former Dean of the Mercer University School of Medicine; and is responsible for organizing Mercer’s medical, nursing, and pharmacy schools into the Mercer University Health Sciences Center.

 

Michael L. Thurmond—In 1986 Mike became the first African-American elected to the Georgia General Assembly from Clarke County since Reconstruction. During his time in the legislature, he was the only African-American legislator elected from a majority white district. Following his tenure in the General Assembly, Mike was called upon to direct Georgia’s historic transition from welfare to work. Mike was elected Georgia Labor Commissioner in 1998. In doing so, he became the first non-incumbent African-American to be elected to state-wide office in Georgia. Thurmond’s latest book, “Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery Heritage, 1733-1865,” was awarded the Georgia Historical Society’s Lilla Hawes Award and the Georgia Center for the Book listed “Freedom” as one of “The 25 Books All Georgians Should Read.”

Susan C. Waltman (AB '73, MSW '75)—Susan is senior vice president and general counsel for the Greater New York Hospital Association, which represents more than 250 public and not-for-profit hospitals and continuing care facilities. In that capacity, she is responsible for overseeing GNYHA's activities in the areas of legal, regulatory, and professional affairs on behalf of its members, with a significant focus on quality and patient safety, corporate compliance, and emergency preparedness and response activities.
