NOAA funds UGA College of Public Health graduate program on ocean sciences and health policy

Led by faculty from the College of Public Health, the University of Georgia is now partnering with researchers from multiple agencies to host a new graduate training program. The program participants will investigate applications to human health and health policy related to aquatic/ocean sciences. A $518,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will support the creation of this new graduate education program. The goals of this initiative are to develop doctoral-level scientists who are trained in fundamental laboratory and field skills of marine and environmental sciences and who are engaged in human health applications of ocean science through exposure and involvement in public health policy.   » Read more

EHS faculty explores exposure at hazardous waste sites

The University of Gerogia’s College of Public Health announces the award of a $550,000 grant to Jeffrey Fisher, professor in environmental health science.   This 5 year grant will support research to develop mathematical models, called physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models, which describe the fate of chemicals in the body.

Students search for smoking gun

Because local law bans smoking in all bars and restaurants, restaurant goers in downtown Athens are more likely to sit with smokers outside than two years ago, said Luke Naeher, an UGA environmental health science professor who is leading the study. "There are fairly high levels of environmental tobacco smoke out there - in outdoor public places such as outside of restaurants or bars - but not much data on it. Trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial solvent, is classified as an animal, and possibly a human, carcinogen. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Georgia produces more TCE air pollution than all but seven other states, at about 231,000 pounds a year.  That fact could be alarming on its own. Now consider that an Athens factory produces nearly half of Georgia’s total. Also consider that the factory is less than one forth of a mile away from W.R. Coile Middle School and neighborhoods.   » Read more

Two UGA graduate students awarded Fulbright research scholarships for 2006-2007

University of Georgia graduate students Rebecca Witter, a Ph.D. candidate in ecological and environmental anthropology, and Bradd Haley, a master’s student in environmental health science, have been awarded Fulbright research scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year.
