SERVING THE CITIZENS OF GEORGIA

The Institute of Gerontology, formerly the Gerontology Center, was established in 1964 by an all-university committee commissioned by the President of the University. The Institute joined the College of Public Health in 2005. The Institute is charged to initiate, maintain, and collaborate in instruction, research, and outreach associated with aging and the aged.

Older Georgians

In addition to the Institute’s current mission of research, teaching, and outreach on aging and older adults, the Institute is charged with a leadership role to highlight and address public health issues among older Georgians. We look forward to this charge, as most, if not all, of the work at the Institute since its inception in 1965 is pertinent to the public health of older adults.

GGEC Initiative

The Institute announces the continuation of funding of its Georgia Geriatric Education Center (GGEC). This $1.26 million dollar grant is funded by the Health Research Service Administration beginning September 1, 2007 to June 30, 2010. The mission of this Center is to increase health literacy and to train health professionals in the care and safety of older adults, especially in Georgia's medically-underserved areas.
