COURSE DESCRIPTION

"Islam and Islamic Culture in Morocco" has a twofold purpose. The first is to provide the student with a window unto the Islamic world through a thorough introduction to a living example of Islam as it occurs in Moroccan culture. The second goal is to present the material under consideration within a coherent framework of essential spheres of belief. The epistemological, teleological and methodological aspects of the Islam and Islamic Culture studied will permit the student to perceive the various concepts presented within a cohesive culturally meaningful whole. This vision will not only provide the student a window from which to view the Islamic World but his own world as well.

GRADING SYSTEM: A - F

EVALUATION SYSTEM: The grades will be awarded according to student particpation in class discussion, student presentations and an oral exam at the end of the program.

CREDIT HOURS: 60 contact hours = 4 credit hours

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The aim of the course is to introduce students to an in-depth understanding of Islam and Islamic Culture. The course will present the student with an broad view of the socio-religious, and socio-political issues that are shaping the Islamic world of today. The course will also deal with the central issue of Islam and the West and the role of modernity within the context of one of the worlds major religions.

COURSE OUTLINE AND SCHEDULE

May 10, Monday: Fly to Morocco

May 11, Tuesday: - Arrive Casablanca Airport 6:00 am.

- Depart Casablanca for Marrakech at 7:00

- Arrive at Marrakesh 11:00, meet homestay families at the American Language Center

- Afternoon and evening free

FIRST WEEK - May 12 to May 16

May 12, Wednesday: - Part 1: Orientation and Introduction to the Islamic cultural world, Overview

Marrakesh: Where city and country meet - The Basin (al-Haouz)

Orientation - at the American Language Center of Marrakesh ALC, and computer and e-mail sites; social mores and basic etiquette

LUNCH ALC

Walk around town, banks, Post Office, Madina, Jamalfna and Cafe de France for coffee

May 13, Thursday:

- Guided historical visit of the Old City and its monuments

- Lunch in madina

- Afternoon: Introduction to Moroccan Arabic and adab

- FINDING A CAFE

May 14, Friday:

- Introduction to the history and culture of Morocco - Allah, al-Malak, al-Watan

- Introduction to Religiology, comparative worldviews, Modernity; significance of reactions to culture shock.

- Moroccan dialectical Arabic (11:30 to 12:30)

LUNCH ALC

- The bazaar, lifeblood of the Islamic City - guided tour of local crafts

May 15, Saturday: Trip to Tinmil

- Trip to Tinmil, lecture on the History of Morocco

- Picnic Lunch by the river side

May 16, Sunday:

- Sources of knowledge in Islam, the Hadith of Gabriel

- Religiology - introduction

- Moroccan dialectical Arabic (11:30 to 12:30)

- Lunch ALC

- Free afternoon

- Music concert in the evening and photo-opt with homestay families

SECOND WEEK - May 17 to May 21 Part 2: Experssions of Islam in Morocco

MONDAY - Trip to the Urieka and Berbers and rural life

May 18, Tuesday:

- Overview of Islamic institutions for implementing methodology: The Mosque, madrasa, palace, qadi, home, souq (agriculture), bazaar (crafts/trade), fortified city (jihad), zawiya (brotherhoods) and tomb complex.

- Moroccan dialectical Arabic (11:30 to 12:30)

May 19, Wednesday:

- The Malikiyya

Afternoon - Picnic lunch at the pass

Evening - Arrive in Zagora Hotel Sirroco - check in dinner and tea

May 23, Sunday - Zagora region

Morning - Visit to Library at Tamagrout and Nasariyya Zawiya, tea in palmrie

Afternoon - Lunch and rest - late afternoon depart for dunes on camels

Evening - dinner and story circle and Moroccan jokes

May 24, Monday - Zagora - Ourarzate

Morning - Depart towards Marrakesh by Ait Haddou

visit Galaoui palace in Ourarzate

Afternoon - Lunch Ait Haddou - check in to Hotel Ait Haddou

vist Ait Haddou Qasbah

Evening - dinner and walk to see stars (make sure your flashlight is working)

May 25, Tuesday - Ourarzate - Marrakesh

- Morning walk at Ait Haddou

- Return to Marrakesh

- Afternoon at homestay families, clean up

NOTE: Free time is to give everyone time to study and keep up with their courses. Free time is also an oppurtunity for students to meet with the professor, for discussions of their presentation or to discuss quesitons of a particular nature. Free time will also allow us to go shopping in smaller groups at various times while other students explore the souk on their own.
