WELCOME FROM ASSOCIATE DEAN NOEL FALLOWS

The Department of Romance Languages is one of the largest and most productive departments at the University of Georgia. The faculty comprises a full range of specialists offering courses in all literary periods and genres as well as linguistics, culture, film and theory. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in French, Italian, Portuguese, Romance Languages and Spanish, leading to B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

Noel Fallows
At the B.A. level we offer a wide variety of courses in linguistics, film, culture, and literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Our courses cover the many countries in the world where French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish are spoken, from Europe, to Africa, to the Caribbean and Latin America. Romance Languages is also one of the few departments on campus that offers a "Practicum in Service Learning" course, whereby students receive UGA credit for volunteering in the local community. Other innovations include our new area of emphasis for the B.A. degree in Romance Languages, Ibero-American Comparative Studies, and our Italian B.A., which now offers two tracks, one in Italian and the other in the increasingly popular Italian Studies. We also offer web-assisted courses in Spanish.

The Department sponsors popular undergraduate study abroad programs in Europe and Latin America. Our Language Communities in French and Spanish continue to flourish as a result of a collaborative effort between the Department of Romance Languages, the Office of the Vice President for Instruction, the Department of Housing, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and the Center for Humanities and Arts. The Language Communities provide students with the unique opportunity to enjoy a "total immersion" experience right here on campus.

Most of our graduate students work as teaching assistants (TAs) as they complete the requirements for the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Teaching assistantships carry a salary which allows TAs to live comfortably in Athens, Georgia, one of the most vibrant college towns in the U.S. We currently have a large and diverse group of TAs from the USA, Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America and we all work together in a collegial environment.
