History Of the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Sigma Alpha

The Alpha Omicron Chapter of Sigma Alpha was activated on September 30, 2000. The idea of Sigma Alpha was brought to the University of Georgia by Mary Ann Davis and Krista Jowers. Both of these young women were active in the Georgia FFA Association as state officers. In October of 1999 Krista Jowers traveled to the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY to receive her American FFA degree. While there she met with sisters of other Sigma Alpha Sororities to discuss the possibility of bringing Sigma Alpha to the University of Georgia Campus.

When Krista returned from the convention she discussed the possibility of starting a chapter at the University with her close friend and roommate Mary Ann Davis. Both saw a need for a professional agriculture sorority for women on South Campus so women could develop leadership skills and develop professional relations. Next, the two young women sought the advice of Mr. Blane Marable, Executive Director of the Georgia FFA Alumni Association. Krista, Mary Ann and Mr. Marable completed the application requesting that the University of Gerogia be considered for a Sigma Alpha Sorority. Mr. Marable agreed to serve as the advisor.

Ms. Louise Hill, Director of Alumni Relations of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and Mrs. Megan Howard Morris also agreed to serve as advisors to UGA's chapter of Sigma Alpha. After consulting the advisors, Mary Ann and Krista met with interested girls in January of 2000, elected officers and began the Sorority in Development (SID) process. Mary Ann was elected the SID President and Krista the Vice President. Other SID officers were Allison Hulst, 2^nd Vice President; Laura Hicks, Secretary; Carol Hicks, Treasurer; and Jennifer Thompson, Rush Chair. They met weekly throughout the semester and studied the history of Sigma Alpha and develped policies and objectives of the UGA Chapter. Twenty young ladies sucessfully completed the process and were activated as the first Alpha Omicron members on September 30, 2000.

The Objective of Sigma Alpha ...

Is to promote its members in all facets of agriculture and to strengthen the bonds of friendship among them. Members strive for achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service, and to further the development of excellence in women pursuing career in agriculture.

Our colors are Emerald and Maize. Our jewel is the Emerald. Our flower is the yellow chrysanthemum. Our mascot is the baby bull.
