Taking Steps to Recognize Staff

School of Social Work

Dr. Nackerud & Norma Armas

Norma Armas was born and raised in Trujillo, Peru. In 1978, Norma came to the United States and settled in Athens, Georgia. She started working at the University of Georgia in 1985 in the Physical Plant. Since then, Norma has served in the Psychology Department, the Dean's office in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and Speech Communication department. Norma became a citizen of the United States in 1994. In June of 1995, the School of Social Work was privileged to have her join our staff. Norma is our logistical support guru as well as our accountant.

In addition to her hard and tedious work in the School of Social Work, Norma is very generous with her time and energy volunteering to help those living in poverty in our community. Thirteen years ago, Norma started collecting toys for Christmas gifts for the less fortunate children in our area.

Each year she chooses a different neighborhood in which to distribute the collected gifts. For this wonderful mission Norma dedicates herself to, she was featured in the Athens EcoLatino magazine in December of 2003.

The UGA School of Social Work is proud to have Norma as a member of our family. She was awarded the 2004 Staff Member of the Year Award at our Spring Honors Luncheon in May. Congratulations!
