Taking Steps to Recognize Staff

Student Affairs Awards and Recognition Celebration

Assistant Director of University Housing Wins the Innovative Achievement Award

Shay Davis, Assistant Director of University Housing, received the Innovative Achievement Award for her work with Hunker Down with Housing as well as her innovative work during the past 9 months as she assumed responsibility for housing assignments and contracts. During that time, she established 150+ overflow housing beds to partially meet last fall’s demand for rooms, engaged in repeated and ongoing communication with hundreds of students and their parents who did not receive campus housing accommodations for fall, and moved residence hall rent collections to the new student accounts system in concert with AIS and Bursar's staff.

Alcohol Sanction Evaluation Team Receives the Collaborative Teamwork Award

This year, a group of dedicated staff worked together to evaluate judicial sanctions for alcohol violations. During the fall of 2002, the Health Promotion Department at the University Health Center began work on an evaluation for the Prime for Life: Campus, an alcohol and other drug prevention and education program utilized by the Department of University Housing, Office of Judicial Programs and the Athens/Clarke County Courts for students who have violated alcohol sanctions and/or laws. The staff wanted to know if the program changed student behaviors and decreased the number of negative outcomes experienced by students (assault, injuries, sexually transmitted infections, poor grades and arrests). In the spring of 2003, a team from the Health Promotion Department, Department of University Housing and the Office of Judicial Programs came together to begin planning the evaluation. This was a complex collaborative effort and the following staff were recognized for their work on this important project: Jim Bove, Kim Ellis, Judicial Programs; Shay Davis, Angie Dawson, Adam Goldstein, Ralphel Smith, University Housing; Carole Middlebrooks, Sara Oswalt, Michael Shutt, University Health Center.

Staff and Faculty from Six Departments Receive the Collaborative Teamwork Award (Across Divisions)

This year’s award recognized the outstanding work of a group of staff members who spent untold hours collaboratively creating and implementing the new Student Accounts System. Where previously only tuition and fees were posted on the Student Account System, staff from units across campus including University Housing, Student Financial Aid, Bursar’s Office, Student Accounts, Administrative Information Systems, Food Services, UGACard Services and the Registrar’s Office, implemented a much expanded account system for UGA students. Because of the diligence of this team, students can now go to one location (either online or in person) to pay tuition, fees, housing, and food services charges as well as view financial aid information. Winners of this award are: Therese Hodges, Heather Buffington, Amy Harkins, Holley Schramski, Amy Thomas, Bursar’s Office; Lisa McCleary, Shannon Lay, Marcie Berrong, Diedre Herndon, Susan Dowdy, Student Accounts; Lynn Smith, Wanda Compton, Connie Perry, Melissa Phillips, Bernadette Johnson, Todd Cutshaw, Yvonne Seay, Larri Gorman, Mike Carey, Angela Callaway, Sharon Burch, EITS; Jim Day, Shay Davis, Deborah Franco, Fay Price, Nicole Schwartz, Mary Patman, Inez Finch, University Housing; Mike Floyd, Terry Caven, Cynthia Malcolm, Dan Bowdoin, Food Administration; Donald Smith, UGACard Services; Gary Moore, Bill Marshall, Shirley Childers, Registrar’s Office.

Tommy Altman is Division’s Unsung Hero

This year’s Unsung Hero, Tommy Altman, has served the Department of Student Activities, the Division of Student Affairs and the University of Georgia for more than 30 years; he has worked diligently to develop and promote relationships among the division and the rest of campus; he has been a mentor and role model to the people who work for him; and he has done so quietly, never seeking recognition or fanfare.

Three University Health Center Secretaries win the Lee Anne Seawell Award for Service to Students

This year three secretaries who work in the Medical Clinic and Allergy Travel Services unit of the University Health Center received the Lee Anne Seawell Award for Service to Students. Shirley Billups, Joy Brudon, and Bernice Hector work side by side on a daily basis providing support to eight clinicians and the nurses in Allergy/Travel Services. They proved their commitment to students and the University Health Center last fall when the Clinic received an extremely high number of phone calls requesting information and appointments for the Menomune vaccine followed shortly thereafter with the high demand for flu shots.

Retiring Executive Director of the University Health Center Receives the Dwight Douglas Award for Service to the Division

Jacquelyn Kinder is retiring after 18 years of service to the Division and the University during which she has dedicated herself to providing healthcare, counseling and education to all students at UGA. As well as setting an outstanding example of achievement in service to students, she has been a role model for many in the stewardship of the student trust. Her perspective has always considered the student first as she has led us through measles outbreaks, rising enrollment, new buildings, integration of services, budget cuts, and more. She has been a steady contributor to Student Affairs through her work on committees and participation in a range of events and programs. Throughout her career, Dr. Kinder has worked tirelessly to promote the health and well-being of UGA students and staff.
