YOUR TOWN: DESIGNING ITS FUTURE

The Center for Community Design & Preservation Director Pratt Cassity just came back from PLAINS, GEORGIA where the YOUR TOWN: DESIGNING ITS FUTURE first latino edition happened. more info on pages 2 and 3 (Your Town Newsletter)...

"Plains, Georgia Workshop The last time Your Town was in Plains, Georgia, was 2002, with a workshop focused on the issues faced by historically African American communities. At that workshop, President Jimmy Carter suggested a future Your Town be focused on the Latino communities in Georgia. From December 13-16, 2007, Su Cuidad (Your Town) hosted 25 community leaders from throughout Georgia. Pratt Cassity, Public Service and Outreach Director from the University of Georgia School of Environmental Design, coordinated the workshop. Joining Pratt were groups of colleagues from UGA that specialized in the issues facing the Latino community. The workshop speakers and exercises focused on building civic capacity and leadership skills within the Latino community. The design problem
addressed the inclusion of manufactured housing into existing community fabric."

yt

"As we had hoped, President Jimmy
Carter stopped by to say hello to the
workshop participants. Pratt [Cassity] gave
President Carter a symbolic key to Your
Town. At 83 years old, President Carter
rode his bicycle to the workshop,
reinforcing everyone’s desire to create
more walkable and livable communities."

One more collaboration between CCDP and Fanning Institute

The Center for Community Design and Preservation Graphics Coordinator Eleonora Machado, worked with the Fanning Institute on the design and layout of the latest Georgia SCORP 2008-2013 document. The plan outlines major trends, priorities and critical elements for success for providing outdoor recreation opportunities for future generations of all Georgians.

To learn more about SCORP 2008-2013 or to download the report, visit http://gastateparks.org/core/item/page.aspx?s=152748.0.1.5

The University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute worked with the Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to develop the plan, identifying the current condition of outdoor recreation in Georgia and making key recommendations on what needs to be done to meet future demand. Fanning faculty served as project managers for the planning effort, designed and facilitated the public participation program and managed the writing, layout and production of the final plan document. Leigh Askew, Danny Bivins, Jan Coyne, and Langford D. Holbrook made up the Fanning team, and collaborated with other key UGA planning partners: the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, the Institute of Ecology, the Warnell School of Forestry and with Eleonora Machado from the Center for Community Design and Preservation.
