The Olin Parker Composition Award
General Rules:
1. Students must be enrolled in classes at UGA for the 2009-2010 academic year.
2. Students must have a sophomore or higher class standing (undergraduate or graduate) for the 2009-2010 year.
3. Compositions and applications must be submitted before 5:00 PM on December 1, 2009 (see below for more details).
4. The composition must be an ORIGINAL work. Each applicant will be expected to sign a statement declaring that the submitted material is his/her own personal work.
Please Submit before 5 PM on Dec. 1st (3rd floor Phi Mu Alpha Mailbox):
1. Four (4) scores of the work. Only the “810” student number should be printed on each score – no other identification please (name, SSN, etc.).
2. Three (3) recordings of the work (3 separate CDs) that can be played from any standard CD player. These can be Finale/Sibelius/MIDI sounds, but the CDs must be music, not data.
3. Application with signed originality statement.
2009-2010 Contest Rules:
1. Composition should be written for any instrumental small ensemble. There is no limitation on instrumentation, except that it is only instrumental and for no more than 12 parts.
2. Composition should be 5-10 minutes in length.
3. Please write with the idea that the work will be performed by college-level musicians.
4. The winning composition must be performed in its submitted form on the 2010 All-American Musicale, sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha, by an ensemble selected by the composer.
Judging Considerations:
1. A panel of three HHSOM faculty members will be asked to judge the compositions.
2. Student must abide by all rules stated above.
3. Although creativity and originality are vital to the competition, the music must be performable by college-level musicians.
