Welcome to the Department of Speech Communication at The University of Georgia

The Department of Speech Communication offers both graduate and undergraduate programs. The undergraduate major in Speech Communication seeks to cultivate in its students highly developed skills in individual oral and written expression, in critical thinking, in group discussion and problem solving, and in conceptualizing the functions of communication. The Speech Communication major is particularly oriented toward helping students understand how communication principles apply to a broad range of contexts, e.g., governmental agencies, health care providers, courtrooms, political campaigns, cross-cultural exchanges, social movements. In this way, students graduate with talents and knowledge that may serve them well in whatever personal, community, and professional directions they choose to pursue.

The goals of graduate education in the Department of Speech Communication are to provide students with tools for generating new knowledge about human communication, to cultivate highly developed skills in transmitting knowledge about communication to various constituencies in need of that information, and to foster an attitude of eager inquiry and service. Graduate education in this Department is particularly founded upon the ideal that each advanced learner's individual interests and talents can be recognized, nourished, and honed in a climate of rigorous study. Consistent with this ideal, the Department encourages graduate students in speech communication to engage in individually tailored interdisciplinary study.
