Graduate Student Travel Awards
2009-2010 Academic Year

Effective fall 2009, the department will offer graduate student travel awards on a competitive basis. The source and amount of moneys available for graduate student travel funding in any given year will be determined by the Department Head.

Process:

Any student who wishes to be considered for travel funds should follow these procedures:

  1. Apply for travel funding using the “Graduate Student Travel Award Application” (see below) for the semester during which travel will occur. In other words, you should apply for fall travel funding in the fall and spring travel funding in the spring semester. Students may only apply for one travel award per semester. For the 2009-2010 academic year, the application deadlines are:

    1. Applications for Fall 2009 travel funding: Due September 21st

    2. Applications for Spring/summer 2010 travel funding: Due February 1st

Please submit all application materials electronically by the deadline specified above to the current Graduate Coordinator, Jennifer Samp (jasamp@uga.edu).

  1. The Graduate Committee (the Graduate Coordinator, the Rhetorical Studies elected member and Communication Studies elected member) will review applications and the Graduate Coordinator will convene a meeting to make travel funding decisions for a given semester no later than the week after applications are due. After consulting with the Department Head, the Graduate Coordinator will notify graduate students about funding decisions as soon as the Department Head has confirmed the amount of funds available.

Decision-Making Guidelines:

Decisions about travel funding will be based on the criteria detailed below:

Degree enrolled: Priority will be given to PhD students:

  1. Year in Program: Priority will be given to students at an advanced stage in their program of study (PhD students: year 3 or 4, MA students: year 2; exceeding the number of expected years in the program will result in a reduction in priority status).

  2. Outstanding Incompletes: Incompletes will result in a reduction in priority status.

  3. Conference Participation: Presenting authors will be prioritized over non-presenting authors.

  4. Conference Type: National conferences will be prioritized over “niche” and regional conferences.

  5. Other: Recipients of a “top paper” in a non-student division will be prioritized over regular presentations.

  6. Application for School Funding: Students MUST apply for travel funding from the Graduate School before submitting an application for Department travel funding. Please attach evidence regarding application to the Graduate School. Note: It is not required that students have heard about travel funding from the Graduate School before applying for departmental travel funds.

  7. Previous Travel Awards: Priority will be given to students who have not already received a travel award in the same academic year.
