CLASS REGISTRATION ISSUES

GET ADVISED IMMEDIATELY!

Summer and fall pre-registration begins Wednesday, March 26 for BOTH TERMS.  Be sure all flags are cleared and you have been advised!  If you do not have an advising appointment, get one IMMEDIATELY!

UNDERLOAD FOR FALL

Students who wish to compete and take less than 12 hours this fall because they are graduating must notify Glada Horvat (glada@uga.edu) to receive underload permission for NCAA eligibility.

REGENTS TEST

The Regents Test will be administered March 5-7 (Wednesday-Friday) and March 17-19 (Monday-Wednesday).  If you are signed up, don’t forget to go!!  Ask your athletic academic counselor if you have questions.

SUMMER REQUEST FORMS DUE MARCH 25

SUMMER SCHOOL AT UGA

Athletic scholarship students who want to attend any term of summer school must fill out a summer school request form.  Funds are limited and you must discuss your plans with your coach and counselor.  The forms are available on our website at  www.uga.edu/sports-academics  For those on partial athletic scholarships, be aware that NCAA rules require that summer aid be in proportion to the aid received during the academic year.  Athletic aid cannot be awarded for summer if you did not receive athletic aid during the academic year.

Be advised that the dollar figure for off-campus room and board scholarship will be different in the summer since it is based on the length of the term and the summer term is shorter than the regular semester.  Don't assume anything!   See Glada Horvat if you are concerned about the amount of summer aid you may receive.

SUMMER FOR HOPE SCHOLARS
Remember that all students face the End-of-Spring check point for HOPE and NO SUMMER HOPE award is final until Spring Semester grades are posted.

For students on HOPE Scholarship, the UGA Financial Aid Office will automatically add Summer HOPE for the number of hours you enroll in summer after registration begins on March 26.  If you wish to take care of this ahead of time you can link to http://www.uga.edu/osfa/cia_0708.html
and complete the Summer Aid Application via the internet and Summer HOPE will be added.  It is important to note that if you add hours that were not originally registered for or noted on the Summer Aid Application, you need to notify Financial Aid.  If there is not enough HOPE on the Award to cover the hours enrolled, Student Accounts will cancel your schedule and/or charge the $50 late fee.

SUMMER HOUSING ON-CAMPUS

Students living in ECV are on 11.5 month contracts (except McWhorter Hall) so you have summer housing.  McWhorter Hall residents must move out by May 10.  If you are moving off campus next year and do not plan to be in Athens this summer, you may qualify for a “buyout” of your contract if you pay for your own housing.  The Housing Office will send information on this topic to students after Spring Break. Please email Glada Horvat at glada@uga.edu if you have questions.

SUMMER SCHOOL AWAY FROM UGA

SUMMER SCHOOL AT HOME

If you are planning to take summer classes at school other than UGA, you must complete REQUIRED NCAA paperwork prior to leaving Athens in order to use this credit for eligibility.  The paperwork and the detailed information can be found on the website at www.uga.edu/sports-academics under “Summer Semester Information”.

MARCH MADNESS – DON’T BET ON IT!

GAMBLING BAN

NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes and all athletics staff members from participating in a money pool among friends and/or wagering or placing a bet on the NCAA Tournament bracket (or any other betting on college sports).  Penalties for violations by student-athletes of the gambling prohibition start with the loss of one year of competition and could include permanent ineligibility.

MONEY MATTERS

BOOK RETURNS FOR WITHDRAWALS

If you are on an athletic book scholarship and withdraw from a class, you must return the books to your academic counselor in the Rankin Smith Center.  If you do not return them, you will be charged for the books because this is an NCAA violation.

TAXES ON SCHOLARSHIP

The room and board portion of your athletic scholarship is considered taxable income by the IRS.  The Athletic Association is not required to report the amounts to the IRS, that is the student’s responsibility. If you need to know the dollar amount you received in room and board in 2007, contact Glada Horvat at glada@uga.edu.  International students will be getting a separate email with detailed information.

RULES, RULES, RULES

SOPHOMORES WITH UNSPECIFIED MAJORS

NCAA rules require students entering their third year of enrollment to have a declared major.  Please take care of this before the end of Spring Semester.  Your academic counselor will be happy to help you look at the alternatives.  Many of you will need an ANCAA Intended Major@ until you fulfill the core.  This is NOT the same as the AIntended Major@ you may see on your DARS report so please speak with your athletic academic counselor about this.

NCAA rules require that Fall 2006 enrollees have 40% of their degree completed by Fall 2008.  You must specify a degree so we can determine if you have fulfilled the 40% rule!

SIX HOUR RULES

You will not be eligible for post-season competition in spring sports if you do not pass six hours of DEGREE CREDIT this spring (Southeastern Conference Rule).  Students in ALL SPORTS will not be eligible for Fall 2008 competition if they do not pass six hours of DEGREE CREDIT this spring (NCAA Rule).

DO YOU HAVE A JOB?

Remember if you work a job during the school year you must report it to the compliance office to be sure NCAA rules are followed.  The number is 542-9103.
