About Us

AACES is an advanced research and development center which provides collaborators with an integrated, multidisiplinary, multiscale (molecular/macroscopic-organismal/landscape-ecosystem levels) research approach to provide critical information on coupled physicochemical and biological processes regulating the fate and effects of contaminants in the environment, supported by outstanding, advanced analytical capabilities. AACES is organized around two interactive research programs in:

Our goal is to attract collaborating scientists from across the DOE complex and the nation for collaborative work at the interface of fundamental and applied environmental research in order to improve the management of contaminated sites. The staff and facilities of AACES are available to researchers in environmental science and engineering and to practitioneers from industry, government, academia and private foundations. Collaborative research efforts focus on:

  • Developing technologies relevant to contaminant behavior in the environment
  • Establishing realistic risk assessment criteria
  • Elucidating molecular mechanisms of pollutant toxicity
  • Developing and evaluating 'novel' waste stabilization techniques and environmentally sound remediation strategies
