Conclusions

The lack of mass differences between enriched and unenriched quads in pots suggests that roots of the three grasses do not finely track soil nutrient heterogeneity.

 

Greater overall root mass of Aristida in C8 than E8 suggests that soil nutrient heterogeneity promotes root mass in this species.

 

Andropogon and Aristida do not allocate more biomass to shoots in a more heterogenous or more enriched environment.

 

Spatially heterogenous nutrients in pots enhanced overall root growth of Aristida, but grass roots do not track enriched and unenriched patches.
