Implications

The soil water content may play a very important role in predicting the impact of hurricane-driven storm surges. Hence, factors such as rainfall preceding the storm surge and topographic features which would encourage drainage or ponding of the saltwater would strongly influence the amount of salt that would infiltrate into the soil, and hence the response to the storm surge.
