Science can establish the framework for the "No-Action Option"

•   A central need is to establish critical decision points for remediation.
The contaminated ecosystem itself is also at risk, and the environmental impact of remediation needs to be better understood.
[W]e need to understand more about the interaction of biology, geology, and health and environmental risks.

The Future?
"We can never duplicate these places.  For once lost, these national treasures can never be replaced.  So it is here that we must continue to study the effects of human activities on the natural environment and learn how to meet our needs while ameliorating our negative impacts on the planet.  If not here, then where?  If not now, building on 50 years worth of accumulated knowledge, then when?"
N.B. Frazer, Keynote Address
Association of Southeastern Biologists
April 1997
