Rebecca Sharitz received her
B.S. in Biology from Roanoke College in Virginia and her Ph.D. in
Botany and Ecology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. Following a brief teaching appointment at Saginaw Valley State
University, she joined the research faculty of the University of
Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) in the 1970s.
She currently has a joint appointment as a Senior Ecologist at SREL
and a Professor in the UGA Department of Plant Biology. Dr. Sharitz
has been active in professional ecological societies, including
the Ecological Society of America, the Society of Wetlands Scientists,
and the International Association for Ecology. She has served on
several National Research Council (National Academy of Sciences)
committees, including the Committee on Restoration of the Greater
Everglades Ecosystem, and the Committee on Restoration of Aquatic
Ecosystems. Her main office and laboratory are located at SREL in
Aiken, SC.
