Sunfish Darrell
Yardley, John C. Avise, J. Whitfield Gibbons, and Michael H. Smith Abstract Electrophoretic techniques were used to examine
alleie frequencies at polymorphic genetic loci in populations of largemouth bass
(Micropterus salmoides), mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis),
and bluegill, (Lepomis macrocbirus) for evidence of generic
changes associated with their inhabiting waters receiving thermal effluent from
nuclear reactors. Comparisons were
made between populations inhabiting natural bodies and those, living in waters
receiving thermal effluent. There
were no clear effects of thermal effluent on allele or genotype frequency at any
of the observed loci. However,
there is significant regional genetic heterogeneity, and two species showed
significant differences in alleie frequencies between lentic and iotic
