BRIEF SUMMARY

At the beginning of the Holocene era, about ten thousand yr B.P., many of the Carolina bays of this region may have been small shallow lakes. At Flamingo Bay, substantial infilling of the basin, calibrated with radiocarbon dates of charcoal, and development of the rim, calibrated with archaeological stratigraphy, occurred during the Holocene. The modern semipermanent pond hydrology was probably established by about 3000 yr B.P.
