Graduate Education Program

This program provides research support for qualified graduate students who conduct full-time thesis or dissertation research on the Savannah River Site. Research is jointly supervised by the student’s university research committee and an advisor at SREL. Since 1967, an average of six students per year have completed degree research at SREL.

Students enrolled in graduate programs are eligible. Preliminary degree requirements at the student’s home institution must be completed. Special short-term arrangements can be made for students early in their graduate careers. Support is contingent upon official university appointment of an Ecology Lab faculty member to a student’s research committee.

Master’s and Ph.D. students are paid a monthly stipend of $1,302 to $1,443 depending upon the program, with supplemental allowances made for dependent children. Travel allowances to meetings and to the home institution, reimbursement for tuition and fees, and support for research equipment and supplies are available in some programs.

Master’s research appointments are for three years. Ph.D. appointments are for five years. The period of appointment includes time spent at the home campus while conducting research, completing coursework, and other degree requirements. Short-term program appointments are for three months.

A one-hour seminar to which all SREL faculty, research staff, and students are invited is expected at the completion of the appointment, along with two copies of the thesis or dissertation.
