A biologically balanced community developed in L Lake during
reactor operations. Permanent shutdown of the reactor during the study provided an
unexpected opportunity to address an issue, controversial among aquatic ecologists,
concerning factors determining composition of the zooplankton. This study provided
evidence that the low abundance of cladocerans in southern reservoirs in summer is due
mainly to intense fish predation rather than to warm temperatures.
