BRIEF SUMMARY

At Pond C, an unexpectedly rich assemblage of organisms adapted to the extreme stresses imposed by intermittent reactor operation. Use of refuges within the reservoir enabled some zooplankton and fish, including bluegill, to survive in the reservoir during reactor operation. Other zooplankton recolonized rapidly during periods when the reactor was not operating. High mortality of fish occurred with reactor restarts after prolonged (2-3 mo) outages.
