SREL Research

SREL has recently organized its research under three broad themes: Characterization, Ecological Risks and Effects, and Remediation and Restoration. These research themes reflect how the environmental remediation process proceeds and will provide a better perspective on how SREL researchers can address specific knowledge gaps in these areas through their research.

Operationally, SREL researchers are organized into four research groups: Advanced Analytical Center, Ecotoxicology, Ecological Stewardship, and Radioecology. All of these programs conduct basic ecological research and apply the findings to environmental issues on the SRS and elsewhere. Much of SREL’s research is applicable to environmental problems related to the effects of industrial activities, including remediation strategies.

SREL places special emphasis on understanding the effects of human activities on the natural environment. Researchers conduct studies in both terrestrial and aquatic habitats on the site, covering all aspects “from atoms to ecosystems.” Projects range from computerized models of the interactions of contaminant molecules with soil particles, to studies of natural plant and animal populations, to the restoration of bottomland hardwood forests.

The SREL research staff annually publish 80 or more articles in peer-reviewed scientific publications and give about 170 talks at universities or professional society meetings. You may search the reprint list by accessing this link: REPRINTS
