Touch an Animal Day August 8, 2009 - 9:00 am - noon Have you held a baby alligator, touched a snake's scales, or petted an opossum before? Savannah River Ecology Laboratory will host their first Touch an Animal Day on Saturday, August 8, 2009 from 9 am to noon at the University of Georgia-SREL Conference Center on HWY 278. The community is invited to get up close and touch a variety of animals including reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Scientists will be on hand to give interesting facts about the different animals. This drop-in event is open to the public. There is no charge, although donations to assist in animal care and conservation efforts are welcome. Directions to Conference Center: From Aiken, take Highway 19 south (Whiskey Road) to New Ellenton, SC. From the intersection of Hwy 19 and Hwy 278, turn left on 278. After 3.5 miles a gravel road will appear on the left, marked by a low wooden sign on the left and a green Department of Transportation sign on the right. Follow the gravel road until you reach the conference center. No SRS security badge is necessary on the conference center grounds.
