Cris Hagen

- Reptile Biologist and Genetics Technician -

I was born in Dayton, Ohio on 14 May 1972. My devoted interest in turtles, crocodiles, and the rest of the universe, past, present, and future, began about the time I started walking. I have been obsessed with herpetology my entire life. During my lifetime my interests have led me to an incredible wife (who is also a herpetologist) and taken me to 5 continents, 4 oceans, and 20+ countries to observe, photograph, and mingle with human cultures and wildlife.

As an adventure naturalist, I have always had a deep interest in exploring the Malay/Indonesian archipelago. Since 1998 I’ve made six excursions into the region spanning about one year of time on the ground. Exploring and photographing islands such as Borneo, Sulawesi, New Guinea, and Komodo has been a major life fulfillment.

I began teaching environmental education at age 11 through the Greater Dayton Herpetological Society and the Dayton Museum of Natural History. I have consistently managed to maintain natural history and herpetology related positions all of my adult life. I accepted a research technician position at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in June of 2002. It turned out to be one the best moves of my life. I thrive here working on a variety of projects. These include field studies with American alligators and diamondback terrapins, outreach and education, maintaining captive assurance colonies of endangered turtle species from around the world, microsatellite primer development and conservation genetics.

I look forward to the next 40 years of field work, world travel, and striving to help prevent turtle and crocodilian extinctions.
