I grew up on
a farm in Kentucky, constantly surrounded by animals. I was not very excited
about science until I attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana where
I studied biology under some incredible teachers and fell in love with
natural history. At Earlham, I was especially interested in ornithology
and herpetology. Then I enrolled in graduate school at the University
of Oklahoma not knowing what to study but only that I didn’t want to stop
learning about nature just because I had a degree. I ended up coming to
SREL for a season to pursue some research ideas I had about marbled salamanders,
and it eventually turned into an M.S. in Zoology. I immediately liked
it here and returned after finishing my graduate coursework. Now I’m a
Ph.D. student at the University of New Orleans and attempting to branch
out into molecular ecology. For my dissertation, I am using microsatellite
markers to explore questions in behavioral ecology and evolution.
