Basinward Shift in Facies

Shown below is an example of an abrupt basinward shift in facies, with a grainstone shoal facies, indicated by the prominently cross-bedded grainstone, abruptly overlying the deep subtidal facies below, which consists of alternating beds of siliciclastic mudstone and hummocky cross-laminated to planar laminated calcisiltites. The jacob staff is marked in 10 cm increments. This photograph was taken in the Upper Ordovician Hermitage Formation near Woodbury, Tennessee.
