Description of Academic Component

The 2008 Thailand Service-Learning Program will be based on the academic rigor of group assessment and analysis of global issues through community engagement and Service-Learning pedagogy. This program will advance the initiatives of UGA’s Office of Service Learning and will be a bridge between a more conventional experience abroad and the internship and/or volunteer service abroad.

The three to six credit hour course will involve a six week stay and 240 contact hours. It will be evaluated based on the University Grading Scale and thoroughness of project completion.

The method of delivery will be a traditional Service-Learning setting with regular discussions, personal investigations and field work, group problem solving, democratic classroom principles, and structured reflection before, during and at the end of the course.

Course-related activities and excursions will include typical tourist activities during the orientation period and site visits related to various projects. The course is open to other related disciplines. A cross-disciplinary team in preferred.

The level of learning will be related to the individual student’s ability to relate to a new environment, immersion in a foreign country and willingness to participate fully in experiential events and activities.
