The tuba-euphonium studio at the University of Georgia is an industrious bunch with a really strong collective work ethic and an unusually strong sense of community. Most of the current students hail from Georgia with a few students coming to Athens from other parts of the United States.
The atmosphere in the studio is one of friendly competitiveness- everyone wants to do well, but nobody wants to do well at someone else’s expense. All members of the studio participate in a weekly masterclass, which usually includes performances followed by comments and critique from other members of the studio. Sometimes, the masterclass might consist of a mock audition, diagnosis of “problem playing” presented by Professor Zerkel, or guest classes taught by visiting artists or other faculty.
Friday masterclass is always followed by “Tuba Lunch”, a weekly bonding experience at one of Athens’ many great restaurants. The studio also enjoys one big social event each semester held at Professor Zerkel’s home: Tuba-Chili in the fall and Tuba-Q in the spring. Students with great volleyball chops are always welcome in the studio! |
