Services
 

Upward Bound has a competent staff of administrators, professional counselors, teachers, and tutors who work very closely with each student to provide the student with skills necessary for post-secondary education. All Upward Bound projects MUST provide instruction in math, laboratory science composition, literature, and foreign language. Other services include:

  • After-school tutoring in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school
  • Information on post secondary education opportunities
  • GHSGT tutoring
  • Academic, financial, career and personal counseling
  • Career development workshops
  • Activities to acquaint youth with career options
  • College admissions and financial aid sessions
  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams
  • Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications
  • College admission testing - PSAT, ACT, SAT
  • Exposure to academic programs and cultural events
  • Stipends

The Upward Bound program consists of two phases

  • The Academic Year Component emphasizes academic achievement and goal setting. This component includes:
    • Student/parent Orientation
    • Grade Specific workshops/seminars
    • Financial Aid workshops
    • UGA Campus Facilities
    • After school weekly tutorial sessions
    • School Visitation at the target high schools
    • College visits Field trips, including cultural/educational enrichment
    • Student Leadership workshops
    • Academic, career, personal college admission and financial aid counseling
    • Parental Involvement/parent Association
    • Skills Tutor (computer assisted tutorials)
    • GCIS (Career information and profile
  • The Summer Residential Component is the most intensive aspect of the Upward Bound year. This component includes:
    • Six weeks of classes on the University of Georgia campus in math through pre-calculus, foreign language, laboratory science, composition/literature, computer technology and various elective enrichment classes.
    • Residential living, planned programming, related to career, recreational, health issues, social issues and other relevant information for young adults.
    • Campus tours, special events and cultural activities.
    • Team Building
    • Academic Assistance

All activities are provided at no cost to the participant. Ninety percent of Upward Bound graduates have entered postsecondary education. TRIO program research shows that Upward Bound students are four times more likely to earn a college degree than students from similar backgrounds who do not participate in the program.
