Sutherland, John
Usery, E. Lynn
Welch, Roy A.
Dr. Usery teaches GIS and conducts research in GIS and remote sensing focusing on feature-based approaches to GIS, three-dimensional visualization, geographic feature representation, and applications of GIS, remote sensing, and GPS to precision agriculture, watershed management and water quality.
Dr. Hodler teaches the cartography courses thematic map design, computer- assisted cartography, cartographic design and production (desktop publishing), and a graduate seminar in cartography. He is also involved in geographic information systems. His research is in thematic map design and map animation for display on a personal computer. Dr. Hodler has created The Interactive Atlas of Georgia, an atlas software package that has a content similar to the book version of The Atlas of Georgia but runs on a PC. The Interactive Atlas is frequently updated and allows the user direct access to the map data.
Dr. Lo's main teaching and research are in photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, and China. He has done extensive field work in China, particularly in the Zhujiang Delta region. He is now involved in three major research projects: (1) small towns development in China (supported by Luce Foundation), (2) application of GIS and multimedia technology to teaching undergraduate environmental literacy (supported by NSF), and (3) mapping of land use changes in the Atlanta Metropolitan region in relation to an urban heat island modeling project (supported by NASA).
Dr. Welch teaches Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, and
Air Photo
Interpretation. Dr. Welch's research
interests include remote sensing /digital image processing,
photogrammetry/image interpretation, GIS,
and computer graphics/software development
focused on applications in ecology,
forestry, geography, geology and hydrology.

Ph.D. in Ecology, The University of Georgia, 1990
Dr. Madden's research interests include the use of GIS and remote sensing techniques for applications in natural resource management and landscape ecology. At the CRMS she is responsible for research in land use/cover, wetlands and coastal habitat mapping using satellite image data and aerial photographs, database development and GIS analysis.

Mr. Jordan's research interests include digital photogrammetry, remote sensing, image processing, stereocorrelation and automated mapping techniques. At the CRMS, he is responsible for research in these areas, as well as database development (especially image databases), ground surveys using traditional methods and Global Positioning System (GPS), and maintenance of the CRMS computer and network infrastructure.

Dr. Gragson has focused during the last ten years on the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. He has conducted field research in Venezuela and Paraguay addressing questions related to subsistence, settlement, and landscape use. His most recent publications include "Human Foraging in Lowland South America: Pattern and Process of Resource Procurement" (Research in Economic Anthropology 1993) and Strategic Procurement of Fish by the Pumé: A South American "Fishing Culture" (Human Ecology 1992).
