The University of Georgia has established a formal governance structure to facilitate institutional planning and awareness in matters pertaining to information technology activities on campus.
Information technology in this context refers to the variety of computing, telecommunications, and support services required to effectively create and utilize electronically recorded information. The formal structure includes: internal computing committees within many colleges, schools, and non-academic units; the Campus Information Technology Forum; the Information Technology Policy Board; the Distance Learning Policy Board; and the Instructional Technology Advisory Committee. College, School, and Unit Computing CommitteesMany college, school, and non-academic units have formed internal computing committees. Members of these committees are representative of groups within these units. Committees meet periodically to discuss computing issues and provide a forum for faculty, staff, and students to influence decisions on computing.Campus Information Technology ForumNote:The Campus Information Technology Forum is being reorganized. Information on this reorganization will be available soon and posted here.
This Forum is a university-wide committee that provides general,
broad-based faculty and staff
input concerning information services, computing, and
telecommunications requirements within
the represented units. The fundamental role of the Forum is advisory to
the various policy
evolving groups within this governance structure. In addition the Forum
functions as vehicle
through which information concerning institutional initiatives in
information technology is
communicated to the constituent units. Representatives for the colleges
and schools are chosen
by the deans from the membership of the local committees.
Representatives from the
non-academic units are appointed by the vice presidents who serve on
the Executive Council.
Several standing committees support the Forum in meeting its advisory
responsibilities such as
the Campus Research Computing Advisory Committee, Network Managers
Council and
Computer Security and Ethical Use Committee. The Associate Vice
President for Computing and
Networking or his designees have non-voting ex-officio status.

[ UGA Institutional Strategic Goals for Information Technology] Information Technology Policy BoardNote:The Information Technology Policy Board has been disbanded and replaced by the Information Technology Advisory Board (ITAB). Information on the ITAB will be available soon and posted here.
This Board, with membership representing critical areas of campus
information services, was
established to articulate the strategic direction, investment
priorities, organizational forms, and
operational standards required to insure coherent institutional use of
computing,
telecommunication, and information resources in a technologically
heterogeneous environment.
The domain of authority for the Policy Board includes those
institutional information technology
services and initiatives supporting the campus at large, whether as a
result of institutional funding
or scope of utilization. Local departmental or working group computing
and networking activities
are not considered by the Policy Board except to the extent that they
are to interoperate with
general campus services or be supported with institutional resources.
Policy recommendations of
this Board are provided to the Office of the Provost
for institutional
commitment. Linkage to the Information Technology Forum is achieved by
requiring that at least
two members of the Board, in addition to the Chair of the Forum, be
voting members of the
Information Technology Forum.
[ Study of Revision of Management Structures to Accommodate a Chief Information Officer] Instructional Technology Advisory CommitteeThe Instructional Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC) has been established as a University-wide committee focused on coordinating institutional planning and investment in instructional technologies. ITAC is organized within the University's formal structure for campus information technology governance as a group parallel to the Information Technology Policy Board with responsibilities encompassing the use of information technologies for teaching and learning. Coordination of ITAC initiatives with the activities of the Information Policy Board and the Campus Information Technology Forum is facilitated by the participation of the chairs of those groups as voting, ex-officio members of ITAC. The Campus Information Technology Forum serves as a source of advisory counsel to ITAC in its deliberations. The Director of the Office of Instructional Support and Development serves as the non-voting chair of ITAC.[More on ITAC] Distance Learning Policy BoardThe Distance Learning Policy Board has been established to address operating policy issues affecting the use of distance learning technology by the University. This includes such issues as equipment purchases, maintenance, program priorities and coordination. Where institutional policies or investments are required, the Board makes recommendations to the Office of the Provost. The Board consists of twelve members, including the Associate Director for Communication Services of the Georgia Center who serves as the continuing chair. Of the remaining members, five are appointed by the appropriate Vice Presidents to represent the Georgia Center, Research, Student Affairs, UCNS and OISD. Six are faculty nominated by College and School deans and appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.[More on the Distance Learning Policy Board]
