Dr. John N. Culvahouse, Interim Director of Bands

Dr. John N. Culvahouse is presently the Interim Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Georgia.  Prior to his appointment at UGA in 1991, Dr. Culvahouse taught in the public schools in South Carolina and Tennessee for 17 years. Dr. Culvahouse holds Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from the University of Tennessee and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Culvahouse has served as an adjudicator and clinician in several states, Canada and Western Europe. Professional affiliations include Georgia Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference, College Band Directors National Association, East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Beta Mu, and the National Band Association where he serves on the Board of Directors. Dr. Culvahouse and the Sumter High School Band Program received the 1990 Sudler Flag of Honor from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. He serves on the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Board of Directors and Sudler Flag of Honor and Sudler Shield selection committees as a Sudler Flag Laureate. Dr. Culvahouse has been presented the Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association on five occasions.


Dr. F. David Romines, Associate Director of Bands & Director of the Redcoat Marching Band

F. David Romines is in his fifth year as Associate Director of Bands and
Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Georgia. His duties include
instrumental music education courses, undergraduate conducting classes and student teacher supervision. In addition, Romines serves as the Director of the University of Georgia Summer Marching Band Camp and assists in all areas of the band program. In March 2004, he was appointed Director of the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band.

Romines holds Bachelor and Master of Music diplomas in Music Education from
the University of Tennessee and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi where he studied conducting with Thomas V. Fraschillo.

Research related to conducting pedagogy has been of particular interest to Romines. His latest work, linked to the operational curriculum of undergraduate conducting classes appeared in the Spring 2003 Journal of Band Research. Additional research has been directed toward individual learning styles and appropriate instrumental musical instruction. Moreover, Romines’ writings on band recruitment strategies were featured in the September 2003 edition of the Instrumentalist magazine.

Conducting activities include serving as Principal Conductor of the University of Georgia Wind Symphony and Guest Conductor of the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble. Additionally, Romines has guest conducted throughout the Southeastern United States, Canada and Italy. Contemporary composers of music for winds including Joseph Schwanter have described his interpretations as “engaging and insightful”.

In February 2004, Wind Ensemble under Romines’ direction performed at the 2004 joint conference of the College Band Directors National Association - Southern Division and the National Band Association at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Romines taught instrumental music in the public school of East Tennessee for sixteen years where he was recognized by the Tennessee Governors School of the Performing Arts for outstanding mentoring and teaching. In addition, Romines received the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence for his contributions to the wind band profession.

His professional affiliations include: Phi Beta Phi, Phi Beta Mu, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, National Band Association, Georgia Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association, East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association and Music Educators National Conference.


Dr. David Lambert, Assistant Director of Bands 

Dr. David Lambert is the new Assistant Director of Bands, Assistant Professor of Music, and Franklin Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow at the University of Georgia.  His primary responsibilities include assisting with the Redcoat Marching Band, teaching instrumental methods, teaching instrumentation/arranging, and supervising student teachers.

Prior to his appointment at UGA, Dr. Lambert served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the internationally-acclaimed University of Miami (FL) Band of the Hour.  During his time there, he was responsible for halftime show and pep music preparation, direction of men‚s and women‚s basketball bands, low brass section instruction, daily drill rehearsal, scheduling for all summer Band Camp activities, and student staff leadership training.  He also served as the "Voice of the Band of the Hour" for all marching band performances.

Dr. Lambert has worked as a trombonist in South Florida, the Michigan/Chicago area, and the Washington D.C. area.  He was a 1999 Downbeat Award winner, a two-year participant in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and his writings on jazz trombone techniques have been published in the April 2002 issue of The Instrumentalist magazine.

As an advocate for trombone solo and ensemble literature, he has given private lessons, taught instrumental methods, directed university and public school trombone choirs, and been active in many different styles of solo and ensemble performance.  He is a member of the International Trombone Association, and the International Association of Jazz Educators.


Mr. Thomas Keck, Assistant Director of Bands

Tom Keck is an Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Georgia. In this capacity, he assists with all aspects of the band program, including design and instruction for the Redcoat Marching Band, primary direction of all other athletic bands, and conducting responsibilities with all UGA Bands. Additionally, Keck teaches courses in conducting and music education. He is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from Arizona State University and has earned music education degrees from the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa.

For five years, Keck was Director of Athletic Bands at the University of New Hampshire where he oversaw all aspects of the Wildcat Marching Band and Pep Bands. In 2001, the UNH Marching Band was invited to perform for Prince Rainier in Monaco as part of a nine-day tour through Italy and France. Keck has guest conducted at regional CBDNA, MENC, and All-State festivals and has served as a clinician/adjudicator for numerous bands and festivals throughout the United States. As a percussionist, Keck has performed with the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, I-PAN Steel Groove, and numerous symphonic and improvisatory ensembles.
