The Marine Institute, founded in 1953, has been a center of nearshore ecological research on salt-marsh dominated coastal ecosystems since it's inception. UGAMI supports ongoing research by resident and visiting researchers in a broad range of disciplines, and also provides access and facilities for college classes to experience field research and gain an appreciation of the Georgia coast. Current research interests at the Marine Institute include ecosystem level and basic scientific studies of salt marsh processes, estuarine complexes, and near shore coastal ecosystems. [ Learn More ]
The Marine Institute has served as a field research laboratory for estuarine scientists from the University of Georgia and around the world since it was established in 1953. It is the longest continuously-operating organized institution in the history of Sapelo Island. [ Learn More ]
The Marine Institute is a unit of the University of Georgia's School of Marine Programs. Its facilities are available for use by graduate students who have completed their formal classroom studies at an accredited college or university and wish to pursue their degree requirement research in estuarine or marine ecological studies.
