Using Sapelo Island
UGAMI visitors requiring access or housing should contact the main office at (912) 485 – 2221 or gracie@uga.edu. If you would like to know about teaching facilities, vehicles, access, or would like to have a guided program, please contact Jon Garbisch at (912) 222-9407 or sapelo@uga.edu. If you would like to conduct research on Sapelo, Gracie and Jon will pass along your desires to Mary Price, mtprice@darientel.net, who will follow up with you. Mary manages boat reservations, collection permits and all regulatory operating procedures, as well as access to various equipment, lab spaces and supplies. Gracie, Jon and Mary will coordinate your needs with the DNR for ferry access and use.

Georgia DNR is the managing agency
for Sapelo island. This includes the SINERR, the R. J. Reynolds Wildlife
Management Area, and the Natural Area south of the Hog Hammock Community.
The Sapelo Island DNR office is located at Long Tabby an historic building
near the airport here on Sapelo Island.

General Information on Sapelo Island
The visitor center is jointly run
by the McIntosh County Chamber of Commerce and the Sapelo Island National
Estuarine Research Reserve (GaDNR) the visitor center can answer all questions
about other facilities on the island both state and privately owned.
As of September 1998, their hours were; Tuesday - Friday 7:20am - 5:30pm;
Saturday 8:00am - 5:30pm; Sunday 1:30 - 5:00pm. These hours roughly
correspond to the gate hours for the entire facility.
The visitor
center is closed on Mondays, although the main gate is open. They
also have for sale a variety of books and guides. |
