Curriculum Vitae

Statement of Research Interests:

Ecology of microbes, including viruses, bacteria, archaea, & microbial eukaryotes in marine and estuarine environments. Monitoring the influence of environmental conditions on microbial gene expression to determine how ecosystem variables affect microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling. Investigating the activity of viruses across salinity and pH gradients. Comparison of freshwater, estuarine, coastal and pelagic microbial populations and functions to determine various regulatory mechanisms on population composition and overall population function.

Current Research Projects at UGAMI:

Sapelo Island Microbial Observatory
Monitoring the temporal and spatial expression of bacterial genes involved in processing novel carbon sources and utilization of nitrogen sources in coastal waters.

MIRADA
Examining the diversity of bacterial populations across the estuarine ecosystem.

GCE-LTER
Supporting the LTER project by measuring bacterial production through the estuarine complex around Sapelo Island.

Viral activities
Examining the influence of viruses on bacterial production in the estuary.

Communicating Science to a Public Audience
Developing high quality video content to utilize in projects for scientific outreach.

Current Associates of the Booth Lab on Sapelo:

Mary Doherty

Dr. Jenn Brofft
Assistant Professor of Biology
Armstrong Atlantic State University

Dr. Jenn Brofft is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Armstrong Atlantic State University and joined us for the summer of 2009 & continues to visit to conduct research on the expression of bacterial genes involved in carbon and nitrogen utilization in aquatic environments.

Mary Doherty

Dr. Mary Doherty
Post-Doctoral Research Associate

MaryD. is working on the SIMO & MIRADA projects using her skills in bioinformatics and gaining skills in monitoring gene expression in aquatic populations of bacteria utilizing quantitative real-time PCR assays.

Mario Muscarella

Mario Muscarella
Research Technician II

Mario does everything from field sampling, to keeping the lab humming, to maintaining bacterial cultures, & molecular analyses of bacterial genes.

Favorite Sapelo Island Moment:

Moving in. Everyone around pitched in and made us feel welcome. People fed us and took care of us. It was fantastic.
