Postdoctoral Position in Microbial Ecology

A postdoctoral position is immediately available (July 2008) at the University of Georgia’s Marine Institute in microbial ecology to study (1) functional genes of heterotrophic microorganisms involved in nutrient cycles, (2) the responses of microbes to solar radiation, and/or (3) marine viral ecology.  Applicants should possess a doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology, or highly related field.  The candidate will work closely with data from the Sapelo Island Microbial Observatory, as well as data collected in association with the International Census of Marine Microbes and Georgia Coastal LTER.  Candidates will also be encouraged to participate in developing new projects in viral ecology and responses of bacteria to solar radiation and pursuing extramural funding for these efforts.  Experience with QRT-PCR, primer design, bioinformatics, and FISH is highly desired, but not required. The research will include both laboratory and field components. The Marine Institute is located on Sapelo Island, which is an undeveloped barrier island located 5 miles off the Georgia coast.  Candidates will be required to live on Sapelo Island, and housing is provided.
