Research
Current research interests at the Marine Institute are oriented towards the study of basic processes within marshes as well as the system level ecology of the salt marshes, their associated estuarine complexes, and the inshore coastal ecosystem. Publications of the Marine Institute (nearly 1000 in number) are gathered together into volumes of Contributions. Contact the Librarian (Laura Cammon), UGA Marine Institute, Sapelo Island, GA 31327 for more information. lcammon@arches.uga.edu. A interactive bibliography of Sapelo related research is also available on line in the GCE Bibliographic Database.

For information on current research activities and publications of our faculty please visit their individual web sites.

Research and Educational Facilities:
The BarnThe main laboratory building (the Barn) houses offices and laboratories for resident and visiting scientists, instrument rooms, a flowing seawater laboratory, a library (with holdings in excess of 6000 volumes). Adjacent buildings include additional laboratory space, an interactive electronic classroom, and apartments for visiting scientists and students. The main buildings are linked with a fiberoptic ethernet system and most core areas (including some housing) are served with wired cat5e or wireless broadband internet access. All electronic databases and electronic journals accessable on the main Athens campus can also be reached through the UGAMInet. The smaller (~25 persons) of two class room / lecture areas has access to the GSAMS teleconference system. GSAMS access will soon be added to the larger Reynolds Theatre (103 persons) as part of a renovation and upgrade to a fully electronic class room (completetion expected late 2004). The research vessel R/V Spartina is a 44 ft. boat designed for work in shallow estuarine environments. Several small outboards are also available for research.

Approximately 8,700 acres of the Sapelo Island marshes, upland, and tidal creeks are designated as a National Estuarine Research Reserve by NOAA. This area was set aside because of its pristine nature and is intended for use in basic research and education relevant to salt marsh ecosystems.
