What is included on the tour?
The seventy five minute campus tour consists of three parts:
- 15 minutes driving through East and South and West Campus
- 45 minutes walking through North Campus, including a walk through a portion of the Zell B. Miller Learning Center and the newly expanded Tate Student Center
- 15 minutes driving through South and East Campus

Does the tour take visitors inside classrooms or residence halls?
Currently, the tour takes visitors inside a portion of the Zell B. Miller Learning Center and through the newly expanded Tate Student Center. Though the tour does not currently include a stop at a residence hall, the Department of University Housing offers a model residence hall room at certain points throughout the year.

What happens if it rains?
The tour will go on unless there is severe weather. The walking tour might be altered or cancelled if there is heavy rain or lightning.

Should I bring anything with me on my visit?
Appropriate and comfortable clothing is recommended. Please click here for average temperatures in Athens. Participants will be standing and walking during the 45-minute walking portion of the campus tour, so comfortable shoes are a must! You might also appreciate having an umbrella at hand in the event of rain.

What should we do if a tour is full?
The Visitors Center has a detailed standby policy. As soon as visitors arrive at the Visitors Center, we can put their names on a standby list. If visitors with reservations cancel, do not show, or bring less people than originally planned, we will start at the top of the standby list and add as many people as we can. If we are unable to accommodate all stand-bys on the driving portion of the tour, we will provide the information that will be missed and encourage visitors to join the walking tour. Directions and parking information will also be provided so that visitors may join us on North Campus for the walking section.

What do we do if we want to add someone to the tour?
If you would like to add someone to your reservation prior to your arrival on campus and space is available for that addition, you may change your reservation on our website. If you would like to add someone upon your arrival, the visitor(s) will be added to the tour pending space availability. Should no space be available, we will place the visitor(s) on the standby list and invite the visitor to join us for the walking portion of the tour if we are unable to accommodate them for the driving portion.

Do I need to fill out a form for the admissions office so they will know my child
visited?
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions documents when a students attends one if its two daily information sessions. However, visiting campus is not taken into consideration during the admission review process.

Why aren’t admissions information sessions held in the same building?
Campus tours and admissions information sessions are offered by two different UGA departments. Tours are conducted by the Visitors Center and information sessions are hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

How can I talk with a financial aid counselor or find out more about scholarships?
The Office of Student Financial Aid website has a wealth of information on scholarships and loans. If you are interested in speaking with someone in the financial aid office, you may reach the office by phone at (706)542-6147 or by email at osfa@uga.edu.

How do I contact professors/advisors about meeting them during my visit?

Where is the bookstore?
The University of Georgia Bookstore is conveniently located in the heart of campus adjacent to the Tate Student Center. Parking is available in the Tate Center parking deck and surface lot and at the Hull Street Parking Deck.

What hotels are in the area?
The
University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel offers 200 rooms and conference facilities in a convenient on-campus location. Additional accommodations are also available throughout the Athens area.

Where is a good place to eat?
University Food Services has multiple dining locations on campus and guests are welcome to dine at any campus facility. Additionally, Athens has an abundance of great restaurants.

What percentage of students comes from out of state?
Approximately fifteen percent of UGA’s students are from states other than Georgia, though there is no mandated cap on out-of-state enrollment. Out-of-state students are not subject to different admission standards than in-state residents. The UGA student body is made up of students from all 50 states and more than 120 nations.

CAMPUS LIFE
Is it hard to find your way around such a large campus?
UGA’s campus spans a total of 600 rolling acres and is occupied by more than 375 buildings.
While this may seem daunting, there are measures that students may take to become more familiar with the landscape. Campus maps, including personal sized maps and larger maps located around campus, are a new student’s best friend. Additionally, current students, faculty and staff, and campus bus drivers are also a great resource for those unsure of which bus to take to reach a destination.

How safe is the campus?
The University of Georgia has taken multiple measures to ensure that campus is a safe as possible. Trained and certified UGA police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Among other things, the Department of University Housing has equipped each residence hall with biometric hand readers in order to control access to student living areas. Is there a campus transportation system?
Yes. The UGA Campus Transit System carries the largest volume of passengers of any university transit system in the country and ranks second to only Atlanta’s MARTA in annual ridership in the state. Buses operate from 6:00am-1:00am during the week and on slightly shorter schedules on weekends. Student transportation fees paid at the beginning of each semester cover the cost of ridership so students are not required to pay a fee each time they board a bus. Campus is also served by the Athens Transit System.

What is parking like?
Parking on campus is strictly enforced by the university’s Parking Services office. All UGA students are required to have a permit in order to park on campus. Upon registration, permits are awarded through a priority system that is based on factors such as a student’s cumulative hours and classification (i.e. Undergraduate Resident, Undergraduate Commuter, etc.).

How is it living in a large residence hall with community bathrooms?
According to the Department of University Housing, the department’s custodial staff
regularly cleans community bathrooms in each traditional-style residence hall. Though several students share community bathrooms, multiple sinks, showers, and toilets are provided to reduce the likelihood of waiting. Additionally, with schedules varying from student to student, it is possible for students to find certain times of day that are frequently less busy than others.

Where do students live once they leave the residence halls? Do upper classmen live in residence halls?
First-year students are required to live on campus, but beyond that it is up to individual students to choose which living arrangements are best for them. Upper classmen do have housing options on campus, though most pick off-campus housing (i.e. apartments, duplexes, houses) after their first year.

Do students really eat the cafeteria food?
Yes, and proudly so. University Food Services is frequently recognized as one of the premier collegiate dining services in the nation, boasting 67 national awards.
Students may choose from one of two different meal plans and may be on the meal plan even if they do not live on campus. In 2007, Snelling Dining Commons became one of the only college eateries in the country to be open 24 hours a day, remaining open from 7:00am Monday though 2:30pm Friday during the school year.

Is it hard to get involved at such a big school?
While UGA is large, there are over 500 student clubs and organizations that are available to help students make the university feel much smaller. From athletic clubs and honor societies to religious organizations, social gatherings, and Greek life, there truly is something for everyone at UGA.

What percentage of students participates in Greek organizations?
Approximately 24 percent of UGA students are members of a fraternity or sorority.

Do all students get tickets for football and other campus sporting events?
Students do have access to tickets for all campus sporting events. All UGA sporting events are free to students except for football, men’s basketball, and gymnastics. Generally football is the toughest ticket and carries a number of requirements and priorities to determine which students receive tickets and whether those who do receive them are awarded a full season ticket or only a partial season ticket. Usually, even new students are able to purchase football tickets for at least half of the home games.

How much time do students really spend studying per day?
Different students are sure to report different amounts of time spent studying. Many
students’ study habits are dictated by such factors as class load and work schedules. While some students may study daily, other students may choose to study only in the days leading up to an exam. Regardless of method, students are bound to find what works best for them and stick with that method. Should students feel the need to seek assistance in finding the best option for them, the Division of Academic Enhancement offers classes to help even the most confident student find the best path to success.

What do students do in their free time?
UGA students occupy their time in multiple ways. Many students take advantage of
convenient on-campus jobs that offer flexible scheduling based upon a student’s academic schedule, while other students opt to look into the surrounding Athens area for employment. The university offers a wealth of extracurricular activities from intramural sports to students clubs and organizations. Of course studying is also an option during the school year and UGA boasts the state-of-the-art Miller Learning Center, which is consistently filled with students while classes are in session.
